7. Basics of how to find winners (20/06/2009)

1) Do Your Homework on Horses

A good horse race betting strategy involves gathering all of the knowledge you can about a particular race. Many successful winning horse racing systems draw from information regarding the horses in a race. Do give preference to previous winners; choosing a horse that has won before is a common horse race betting strategy that often works.

Do give preference to horses who have recently run in a race; their legs will be ready to compete. A horse that has not run for several weeks may have suffered a recent injury or sickness. It doesn’t matter how good they were before their break, chances are they will not be as good as a horse that has been running for a long period of time.

2) Do Pay Attention to All Finishes

While it is always great to pay attention to horses who have finished first, second, or third in their last four starts, you could also benefit from keeping an eye on a couple of potential sleepers. Any horse that has finished within two lengths of the winner is worth remembering for future betting.

3) Don’t Forget the Jockeys: They Matter

When you want to learn how to win at horse racing, do make it a habit to learn about the jockeys. A top-notch jockey has been known to turn an unreliable horse with high odds into a real gem. Do take notice to experienced jockeys who have a reputation of running a good long race, lasting more than a mile.

4) Do Familiarize Yourself with the Different Types of Wagers

Smart horse race betting strategies are also improved when people understand the different types of wagers and terms involved. When you choose just one horse, you have struck a win bet. Multiple bets are allowed within the same race. With place bets, if the horse you select finishes first or second or third and fourth in handicap races, you win. Horses that finish first, second, or third are called a show bet. Exactas and Forecasts deal with two horses in the same race; your horses must finish first and second in order to win.

5) Do Pay Attention to the Odds

Learning how to spot the better odds and weigh them against the horses in the race is a good way to strengthen a horse race betting strategy. Some of the most accurate resources to turn to when investigating the odds of a horse race include the know-how associated with sporting books and bookmakers. Usually, they possess a long line of experience, which comes in pretty handy when choosing winners and building a good horse race betting strategy. The Racing Post betting forecast is incredibly accurate and what most opening shows are based on. Horses forecast in the first five or six in the betting win most races.

6) Don’t Ignore the Track Conditions

When you pay attention to the track conditions, you might be able to incorporate this information into your winning horse racing system. Tracks that are slow or heavy provide good racing conditions for fast starters. Horses that tend to take the lead early succeed better with muddy, slow, or heavy track conditions. Some horses, no matter how fancied they are just won't run well on certain ground conditions and are worth ignoring and taking on.
