Van Der Wheil Ratings (VDW)
During the late 1970’s and
early 80’s Che Van der Wheil became a “living legend” to
many avid systemites via his numerous letters and articles
published in the Sporting Chronicle Handicap book’s Sports
Forum.
He came up with a formula to rate a race on the class of
each horse, by finding it's ability rating and found that
over time he could a hit a strike rate of over 35% and at
good prices.
This method of finding the class horse in a race is still
being used today and is still finding many winners as well
as exactas and tricasts by combining the top 3 rated.
Other methods were added to his ability
rating which narrowed down selections but increased the strike rate of
winners including a form rating which found that a horse top rated on
each had an excellent chance of winning, especially in better class races.
Van der Wheil also liked to improve his
chances by adding a further rating or two to his calculations and along
with his own ratings he used speed ratings from the Sporting Life to
enhance his success. He thought that if a horse was top or top three in
all ratings he could almost guarantee success.
It can take fifteen to twenty minutes to
rate each race on a card as is quite laborious, however Inform Racing
now have these ratings calculated for you for every race, with
the top 3 rated on ability and form all highlighted, plus you can add
our speed ratings into the mix as well.
